T&T Commemorates International Women’s Day with 3rd Annual Women’s Rights Rally & March
International Women’s Day (IWD) (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity. This is why QueerTT.com joins with and encourages all LGBTQIA persons to support IWD given the many areas of intersectionality.
Official site – https://www.internationalwomensday.com/
International Women’s Day (IWD) has occurred for well over a century, with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland. Prior to this the Socialist Party of America, United Kingdom’s Suffragists and Suffragettes, and further groups campaigned for women’s equality.
Today, IWD belongs to all groups collectively everywhere.
Trinidad and Tobago will host its 3rd Annual Women’s Rights Rally & March for International Women’s Day 2019 on SATURDAY 9th March, Queen’s Park Savannah (opposite White Hall). QueerTT.com will be there to participate and engage the community!
INFO FAIR – 12noon – 2:30pm
GATHER – 2:30pm
WELCOME – 2:45pm
MARCH – 3:00pm
RALLY – 4:15pm
The event will feature a short programme with dynamic speakers, theatre, poetry and musical performances. The gathering space will be wheelchair accessible and the rally will include sign interpretation. If you have any specific needs, please do contact email@example.com.
All are invited once again to “Bring Yuh Message and Come” – as we have for the past two years. The 2019 theme pulls from the international theme of “Balance for Better” and focuses on local demands for gender justice, especially to end gender-based violence. One of the main goals of the Women’s Rights Rally and March is to provide a safe and inclusive space for all citizens and residents of Trinidad and Tobago to share their concerns and to support women’s rights.
We ask all interested persons and organisations to do the following:
1. Last Lap with Us! Encourage 10 persons to participate. Mobilise your community! Bring your family. Mas costumes are welcome! Traditional mas characters and mas bands will be joining us for the march and rally!
2. Make and walk with messages of Gender Justice on banners, placards, flags, costumes, masks, and/or shirts – Demanding Better. We invite organisations and individuals to bring your concerns and messages for action and change.
3. Find/bring something to make noise while we march (drum, shak shak, tambourine, whistle).
4. Be ready to push off at 3:00pm but feel free to begin to gather and mingle from as early as 12noon for the Info Fair.
5. Plan and walk with your snacks and water in portable, reusable containers; zero waste is the goal.
(Note Soup will be on Sale!)
If you are unable to attend in person, please share your solidarity messages on the International Women’s Day Trinidad and Tobago Facebook Page @IWDTrinidadandTobago or this event page.
